It's likely that this route hasn't appeared on your Instagram feed. In fact, it might even be the first time you've heard the name Ericeira. This is probably exactly why you should read on. A paradise to explore, an embrace of nature in its purest form, cycling between seascapes and cliffs... Fancy discovering your new gravel destination?

Ericeira comes from the Latin word ‘Erice’, which refers to a type of plant, the heather Erica, which is common in the region.

This plant is found in many coastal areas of Portugal and has been an important feature of the local vegetation since ancient times. A postcard that accompanies us from the starting point of the route.

Beaches and cliffs: the perfect start to your gravel ride

From Aethos Ericeira , we reach Praia da Escadinha, a beach hidden between cliffs offering unparalleled views of the Atlantic Ocean. The road to Praia da Escadinha is full of gravel paths through stunning natural scenery.

Its sister beach is Praia da Calada, small and with a breathtaking view of the sea and the rocks that caress it. Access by gravel roads is perfect for those who enjoy a moderate challenge in a peaceful and spectacular environment. It is one of the most recommended gravel routes in Ericeira, combining technical challenges with natural beauty.

A break at Praia de São Sebastião

Following the coastline of Ericeira, we arrive at the gates of the village that gives its name to the region, the famous Praia de São Sebastião, known for its picturesque charm and relaxed atmosphere. Here, it is easy to enjoy a short break while contemplating the sea views and taking in the tranquility of your surroundings. The gravel road to this beach is a perfect blend of gentle trails and breathtaking scenery.

The town, with its cobblestone streets and vibrantly painted houses, creates a welcoming atmosphere. Ericeira's history, its fishing tradition and privileged natural environment, dates back to ancient times, with traces of Phoenician and Roman settlements in the area. During the Middle Ages, Ericeira consolidated its reputation as an important fishing port, which accelerated the economic and cultural development of the region.
